Over the last 12 months I have been following the Curly Girl Method* and have been on the quest to find products that work with my hair. Recently I purchased the Créme de Curl, Curl Control Cream from Umberto Giannini and have been using it quite a lot so thought it was time for a review.
My current hair routine is to co-wash my hair (using only conditioner) and to pop in one product only – usually a cream – and put it in a t-shirt turban (known as plopping).
Previous to this cream I had used a different product from Umberto Giannini which seems to have been discontinued (even though it only launched a few months earlier) and had enjoyed it and hoped this would be the same but it is slightly different.
Application
I use a 10 pence piece size and rub it in to my hands then rub on to wet hair.
Consistency
It is a thick-ish cream consistency and has a slight pink colour to it.
Scent
It does have a nice scent but isn’t too overpowering, although it does linger so I’m constantly getting compliments on the smell of my hair.
So what do I think?
This does work! This keeps the curls curly but not frizzy and soft and bouncy. There is no crispiness and doesn’t seem to leave a residue on the hair.
Any downsides?
There is one downside and it’s a big one… this product contains silicones which through the curly girl method you should avoid. It does appear low on the ingredients list though so not sure how bad it is for my hair and I do think it works.
Final thoughts
I still miss my all time favourite which was the Naked Hair curl cream as that was silicone free but it’s a good replacement. There is still a long way to go for highstreet shops to sell appropriate hair products for curly/mixed hair but this will have to do in the meantime.
*The Curly Girl method is found here. I will be doing a post in the future about what I do with my curls.
Your hair looks great!!
Oh my. Your hair is absolutely stunning. Frizz can be so annoying, its great that you found the curl control cream to be a good treatment.
I like how it doesn’t leave any residue. It’s really annoying when that happens
This sounds great – perfect for my curly hair which happens to be very frizzy during the winter months! Your hair looks amazing, I love the bouncy curls! Good to hear it doesn’t leave residue and the scent lasts! 🙂 xx
Your curls look amazing, the cream definitely did a great job of managing them x
Thank you – my hair is feeling really good at the moment x
Your hair is amazing! As someone with very straight hair I’ve always wished I was curly! Love the technical term ‘plopping’ too – made me giggle!
That’s a shame that is has silicone in it, If it works great! But it’s still a shame. I know what you mean completely! I try to use natural products too but sometimes it’s all you can find at the time!
I am the complete oppersite of you, I have poker straight hair. Just get up brush it. If I do try and curl my hair it only lasts for an hour and they fall out
I love the smell of the umberto giannini range. I used to use the curl jelly when I was trying to boost my natural wave but it did get a little crispy and my hair isn’t as naturally curly as yours.
I’ve seen others talking about the curly girl method, might look into it more to see if it will work on my wavy hair.
